Special Nature Reserve Uvac is located in the municipality of Nova Varoš and Sjenica and it occupies the territory of 7543 acres. The lowest point of this natural reserve is at 760, and the highest at 1322 meters of altitude.

Unique charm to the beautiful canyon of the river give the curving meanders of the river Uvac. These are natural convolutions that are made due to many years of the river punching trough the limestone rock. Meanders of the river Uvac resemble a maze, and in some places turns at an angle of 270 degrees.

The Uvac River’s spectacular meanders are the highlight of the 75-sq-km Uvac nature reserve in southwestern Serbia. The incredibly green river snakes through steep limestone rock in a zigzag manner – a feat of nature that’s best admired from high above, at Molitva or Veliki vrh lookouts. The reserve, which also comprises a 6km-long cave system, owes its protected status to 219 species of plants, 24 types of fish and 130 bird species.

In addition to the river, and its meanders, the Reserve also consists of the three artificial lakes: Uvac Lake, Zlatar Lake and Radoinja Lake.

“Uvac” was placed under protection in order to preserve the Griffon vulture– rare species of vulture eagle of the imposing size, with wing span up to 3m, making it a powerful flyer whose flight was researched by scientists – aeronautics, and applied those research materials in the construction of aircrafts. Griffon vulture is a bird that doesn’t kill, doesn’t catch a prey or seek a victim. Its role in the food chain in the ecosystem is unique and irreplaceable –it is fed exclusively to dead animals, thereby preventing the spread of the disease and doing “natural recycling“. That’s why this species is appreciated all over the world.

A number of hiking trails lead around the canyon and past the lookouts, from 2km to 10km, offering plenty of birdwatching opportunities along the way. The 2km-long Ice Cave (with a permanent temperature of 8°C) has several galleries and is rich in ornaments.

The cruise trip takes 4h 30 minutes. The cruise goes through the meanders, then we stop and go on a walking tour to the ice peak, there is a panoramic view of the meanders. The trail is 1100 meters long and very demanding for walking.

You will be accommodated in a pretty holiday house situated in the city of Nova Varoš. The house is able to accommodate up to 5 persons. There are two bedrooms, one double bed and one single bed. In the living room, there is a large sofa. The house also consists of a small kitchen with kettle and oven, a bathroom with shower, a toilette and a washing machine. There is also a private parking place and a beautiful spacious garden.
